Jersey Joe Weighs In

Joe Martinek by way of Hopatcong High School, NJ returns to the Scarlet Knights as a redshirt sophomore having had a breakout year last season. Martinek rushed for 432 yards on 76 carries with 317 of those yards coming in his final five games of the season. Martinek looks to build on the 5.3 yards per carry and the four touchdowns he scored last season.

Joe Martinek is anxious to continue the bruising campaign he began last year. He welcomed his first practice with full pads and felt very comfortable being able to get back to contact.

"Since the bowl game it's the first time putting everything on, it's a good feeling to get back to it," stated Martinek.

Many a Scarlet Knight fans, in full support of Martinek's loyalty to his home state, have begun referring to the bruising ‘back as "Jersey Joe" so we thought we would take the opportunity to get his thoughts on his unofficial nickname.

"It's great, I love it. I'm from Jersey [and] I'm a Jersey guy.

"I live in North Jersey, my grandpa lives in South Jersey," he continued. "That seems to be the popular nickname and I embrace it."

His bruising style aside, it's been that coupled with Martinek's production that has been noticed. Schiano had only words of praise for his young running back.

"He's looking good," Schiano stated before adding, "I'm anxious to see him as we get into scrimmages."

When discussing his strengths the respectful Martinek took the opportunity to pay credit and offer praise to his coaches over the years.

"My instincts in running the ball, I've been playing running back since I'm seven years old. The great coaches I had growing up, they're great running backs, they've taught me a lot."

Martinek went on to describe the team chemistry with the other running backs in Schiano's stable of talented Scarlet Knights.

"It's been great, ever since my freshman year we've all been friends, Kordell (Young) I've known him throughout high school, we all watch film together, we're all friends."
