Keith Lumpkin: A Star in the Making

St. Peters Prep (NJ) continues their tradition of producing outstanding FBS talent with the emergence of 6'8 265lb So. OT Keith Lumpkin. This incredibly agile, as well as super talented prospect is on the verge of becoming a big-time collegiate football as well as basketball recruit.

His tremendous skills on the basketball court have translated over to the gridiron in regards to footwork and athleticism. SOR caught up with Keith to discuss his evolution into a top-notch football prospect.

"Basketball was my first sport. It helps me with my speed and quickness. Coach Hansen likes me on offense for that reason. He likes how I'm mobile and can pick up the outside backers and stuff." said Keith Lumpkin.

The already two time All-county basketball star as well as honorable mention All-County football selection is obviously a versatile athlete. "I enjoy both sports the same. In basketball, I consider my game one of both power and finesse. I think I'm that way with football too. They say I have good pass blocking skills. When I was younger, my father taught me to use my hands. We would do drills and stuff like that. I guess he was preparing me for football" he said.

Last season, Lumpkin saw the field at a few different positions. "I started at right tackle, right guard, and tight end. I didn't care. I just wanted to get on the field. Actually, I enjoy tight end the most. It's similar to tackle except there is less responsibility. You just have to protect the outside. Also, I played tight end when I was younger so I am comfortable catching the football. They want me at right tackle for next year, but I am gonna get time at tight end too. My goal weight for next season is 275. Coach Hansen just wants me at 280lbs by my senior year. Currently, I run a 4.96 forty at 265lbs."

When asked which sport he plans to play on the next level, he mentioned, "I don't know. I like both sports the same. I'm gonna wait until my senior year and weigh my options. If anything, I would like to play both sports. I love them both."

As for the programs recruiting him early, he stated, "I hear from Rutgers about football and basketball. I don't know. I would like to go on a visit and see how everything is. I met one of the Rutgers coaches in Coach Hansen's office in May. He just wanted to get all my info and invited me down to camp. I'm thinking about attending camp. My buddy Demetrius Smith from another school is going so I might go down with him." Seton Hall is also recruiting Keith pretty hard for basketball.

When asked about his up and coming, highly talented Jr. class, he responded, "yeah Savon (Huggins) and Sheldon (Royster) are really good too. They are both playmakers. I think we should be able to take everybody right now, but definitely by our senior year. This could be our year too though. We have goods seniors in Jake Kaufman and Armiston. Hopefully, we can get it done. " SOR will keep you informed as to the progression of this talented prospect's recruitment.
