Umejei Brings Speed to DT Position

Jr. DT Kevin Umejei of Albertus Magnus (NY) is apparently a particularly swift defensive tackle candidate with extreme agility for the position. This off-season he is transitioning from a 1st Team All- Rockland County MLB to an athletic inside tackle. SOR caught up with Kevin to discuss his transition and overall recruitment.

"Last season I had 89 tackles, 7 sacks and 1 interception from my middle linebacker post. I also played fullback and had about 380 yards and 4 touchdowns. I ended up earning 1st team All-County. This off-season, I have gained about 20lbs.(or so). I went from around like 260 and now I weigh 287lbs. It's a combination of just extra weight and muscle but its mostly muscle. I have been doing a lot of eating and heavy lifting to get ready for my new position." said Kevin Umejei.

Although Umejei claims to have gained a ton of weight to play his new position, he claims to not have sacrificed much speed. "I still run a 4.78 forty and a 4.7 shuttle. I have a405lb bench, 515lb squat and a 29' vertical leap. I have been told that I move around well for my size. At 6'1, since I don't have the height, my weight, strength and agility make up for it. Actually, I'm lucky to be 6'1 since both of my parents are 5'8."

He continued, "I am an aggressive player with a nose for the ball. I watch a lot of film so I'm always pretty prepared for what the game will bring. I play smart."

Kevin has been working hard on his craft. "I work out with guys like Danny Foose and Doug Rigg. Foose is actually my workout partner and we help each other a lot. I know he likes Rutgers a lot. I like it too. It would be a lot easier going in there with someone that you know."

Kevin currently has no offers but claims that UCF is close to offering. He feels that playing in New York and at a small school is the reason why he is being under-recruited.

As for other schools showing him interest, he mentioned, "Rutgers and Duke are recruiting me. I like both schools. I like Rutgers a lot though. I like the way the players are over there. There are no egos and everyone is a team player. I think they can win a national championship in the next couple years. I spoke to Coach Susan at the beginning of May. He seems to like me. Also, another Rutgers coach came down to my school and tried to get me to camp. I want to go to the (Big Man Academy)camp this weekend, but am having trouble with my transportation because my coach would take me but he's taking a few guys from the team down to Temple this weekend. ..but I'm gonna try."

He continued, "Overall, I don't have any favorites right now though. I am willing to play anywhere and would show interest in any college that shows interest in me. I'm currently up for grabs." SOR will keep you informed.
