Mauro Discusses Rutgers Visit and More

6'2 220-pound All-County LB Vinnie Mauro sports a 4.0 GPA and plays for what is arguably the #1 high school football program in the country in St. Thomas Aquinas (FL). He has contributed to his team coming off a High School National Championship and now has the opportunity to repeat if they can get past a slew of talented foes including Byrnes HS from South Carolina this upcoming season.

Vinnie took a trip to Rutgers this summer in order to attend camp and assess his interest level. SOR caught up with him to attain his impressions.

"Rutgers camp was great. It was probably the best camp that I have ever been to. I learned a lot. I got to go up there with my teammates Brian Robinson, Renaldo Curtain, and Garth Jobb, so it was a fun time." said Vinnie Mauro.

He continued, "I got to speak personally with Coach Schiano a bit. I also spent some time with Coach Fraser and Coach Jenkins who is my recruiting coach. Coach Frasier is the best. He actually coached my high school linebacker coach (Coach Wenger) at Colgate. He is the best. Coach Fraser is a very smart football mind."

He further mentioned, "Coach Jenkins is my recruiting Coach and he is a great guy too. He got us to come down and show what we can do. I got my Rutgers offer back in the spring from them."

Mauro has offers from Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Navy, Marshall, FIU and Wisconsin. He currently claims that Navy and Vandy are his favorites although Rutgers and Wisconsin are close. "I like Navy because I come from a lineage of servicemen and what better place to serve your country than the Navy. Also, I eventually wanna be a pilot. My choice will not be based only on football, but the betterment of my life instead".

Vinnie has just returned home from a visit to Vanderbilt where he loved the atmosphere. He mentioned, "I like Vanderbilt a lot. I like it because it is a small place and it is very much like Navy but without the Military aspect. It would be awesome to go there and play in the SEC."

As for Wisconsin, Vinnie claims to not know much about the school other than the fact that his former teammate and superstar Conner O'Neill said it is a great place.

Vinnie is focused on possibly repeating as a high school national championship this year. When asked about it, he mentioned, "We definitely have the athletes to do it. We start practice on August 10th and put on the pads on the 12th. We face a real tough schedule in playing teams like Boyd Anderson (FL), Lakeland (FL) as well as an Ohio power, but with guys like Lamarcus Joyner, Cody Riggs, and Brian Robinson on your team anything can happen. All of us work extremely hard and will be ready". SOR will keep you posted.
