Givens officially a Scarlet Knight

Rutgers announced, earlier this afternoon, that Darrell Givens, one of the top corner-backs in the nation according to numerous scouting outlets, has joined the Scarlet Knights family. Givens is eligible to practice and participate in game action in 2009 for the Scarlet Knights.

The circuitous route to college is finally over for Darrell Givens, the Lackey HS [Fort Washington, MD] standout, who had earlier signed with Penn State. Despite receiving full clearance from the NCAA, Givens was informed that PSU admissions was unable to grant him entrance to the school.

Not wanting to spend up to a year at prep school with the option of joining PSU at a later time, Givens immediately decided to look into a half dozen or so schools where he could continue his education and athletic career. The last three standing among that group were North Carolina, South Carolina, and Rutgers.

Givens had initially scheduled a trip to North Carolina, but canceled it upon learning that the UNC admissions process may take up to one week, and his status may still not be known with the school until after preseason practice was underway.

Though speculation was rampant that UNC's decision cleared the way for South Carolina, IC's sources suggested that Rutgers had jumped in front as the clear favorite.

Indeed, Givens' long road has reached a conclusion as earlier today Rutgers announced that the #11 CB in the nation, according to, has decided on and has joined, the Rutgers football program.
