"We are thrilled to be a partner with the Champs Sports Bowl, stated BIG EAST Commissioner John Marinatto, earlier Tuesday afternoon, after announcing the Big East's newest bowl partner.
The Champs Sports Bowl will replace the Gator Bowl, who had insisted on a partnership that would allow possible selection of Notre Dame twice every four years. Instead, the Champs Sports Bowl will have the opportunity to select Notre Dame once during the four-year agreement.
After the Big East's automatic qualifier into the BCS, the Champs Sports Bowl will have the initial selection of remaining qualified/bowl-bound teams. An opponent for the game for 2010-13 has yet to be determined.
Payout to the Big East could reach $2.4 million, though precise details were not disclosed. This value is slightly less than the previous $2.5 million agreement with the Gator Bowl.
The dates for the Champs Sports Bowl will remain Dec. 27, 28 or 29, a slight change from the Gator Bowl's previous New Year's Day slot.
The game will be televised on ESPN.
