Donnie Diaz (WR, 6'6"-190lbs, 4.45 forty) from Itasca Community College in Minnesota verbally committed to play for Rutgers this past weekend. Last season, Diaz had 46 receptions, 857 yards and 11 touchdowns in 9 games. This was all done in a run oriented offense.
One of the Insiders.com recruiting experts, Max Emfinger wrote that Diaz "has as much speed and tremendous upside potential as any receiver in the country". Now Rutgers will look to tab into this potential.
We had an opportunity to interview him this afternoon. This is what he had to say:
He stated that he liked Coach Schiano and believed that they can do some good things next year. As a junior college transfer, he was looking for a program where he can earn early playing time. He felt that Rutgers provided that opportunity. The Rutgers campus and the surrounding area reminded Diaz of St. Paul, Minnesota - his home town.
He had the advantage of having his position coach recruit him, Coach Darrell Hazell. He stated that Coach Hazell is a "great guy", who knows a lot about football and life. Coach Hazell told Diaz that he has a lot of potential.
He plans in majoring in Forensic Science and felt that a Rutgers degree is highly valued.
Who did he "hang with"?
Diaz was hosted by Ryan Hart and his roommate was Terrance Shawell, who also committed to Rutgers.
What other schools recruited him or offered him a scholarship?
What is his biggest strength as a player?
He stated that his height and speed are his best atttributes. There are numerous occasions on the field where he finds himself with a 6-inch or more height advantage. In addition to his height and speed, Diaz stated that he has a good vertical leap.
