In all, the schedule will feature nine teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament a year ago, with potentially a tenth team included depending on the outcome of games in the 2009 Legends Classic. Rutgers will be one of four teams taking place in the championship weekend of the event held in Atlantic City November 27th and 28th. The Scarlett Knights will face Massachusetts in the opening round with a match up against either Florida or national runner-up Michigan State set for the following day.
In all, Rutgers won't have to leave the state of New Jersey until their twelfth game of the regular season. Aside from their weekend in Atlantic City, the team will have nine home games to begin their schedule. The 2009-10 campaign will open up with a Saturday afternoon game against Marist, followed by contests with Drexel and Vermont in the regional rounds of the Legends Classic. .
The team will see a bevy of in-state competition in the month of December, with home games scheduled against Princeton (Dec 3), Monmouth (Dec 9), Rider (Dec 15) and NJIT (Dec 19). .
The non-conference schedule will be highlighted by a December 28th match up with reigning national champ North Carolina in Chapel Hill. This will mark the second time in three years the Scarlett Knights have met the Tar Heels, the last which resulted in an 87-48 loss.
The regular season Big East schedule will open up on January 2nd when Rutgers plays host to Cincinnati. The Scarlett Knights will face conference foes Georgetown, Seton Hall and DePaul twice each, while playing every other team once. The team will travel for road games at Louisville, West Virginia, Marquette, Providence and Pittsburgh, all of whom played in a postseason tournament last year. .
At this time, Rutgers is schedule to appear in three nationally televised games. Their December matchup with North Carolina will be aired on ESPN2 as will their January 30th home game against Notre Dame. On Thursday, March 4th the Scarlett Knights will host Seton Hall in a game that will air on either ESPN or ESPN2. .
Rutgers will return seven players from a team that went 11-21 overall and finished 2-16 in the Big East. .
