Rutgers staying on Florida cornerback

The Scarlet Knights are looking to add a few cornerbacks, and one they recently scouted from Florida already holds an offer. The player is set to visit Rutgers next month, but also is looking at Louisville, Syracuse, Troy, Iowa, Florida State and Western Kentucky. Find out what he had to say about Rutgers, his recruitment, and when a decision could be forthcoming.

Tampa (Fla.) Catholic cornerback Jeremi Wilkes knows what he wants in a school. He just hasn't had enough time to figure out which school is the best because he is spending so much time concentrating on his senior season.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Wilkes was supposed to visit Louisville this weekend, but decided not to because of a busy schedule. He is slated to visit Syracuse next weekend, coincidentally when Rutgers travels to the Carrier Dome, and will take an official visit to Rutgers for the Dec. 5 game against West Virginia.

"Right now I'm in the middle (of the recruiting process), and the options are open,'' Wilkes said. "I'll take my visits to narrow down my list.''

Wilkes plans to reschedule his visit to Louisville, and also will visit Troy. He also is looking to schedule his fifth official visit.

"I know there's Iowa, and also Western Kentucky and Florida State,'' Wilkes said. "I think about it a lot, but I do focus on the season. I think about both. I think about schools where I can see myself fitting into the program, and into the scheme and things that they run.

"I want to see things like coverage-wise, do I see myself fitting in, or whether they play man or cover-3. We play both in high school. We play a mixture of things.''

He holds offers from each of the aforementioned schools.

Wilkes said he hears from Rutgers cornerbacks coach Chris Hewitt regularly, and the two developed a strong relationship. He added Hewitt was at the school earlier this month recruiting.

"I talked to coach Hewitt a lot on the phone weekly,'' Wilkes said. "We talk about everything, like how I have to be smart about making a decision, and also we talk about their games and position-wise what's going on.''

Wilkes is being recruited as a cornerback, but he also returns kicks and punts for Tampa Catholic.

"I like the fact of having the ball in my hands,'' Wilkes said. "It's fun getting the ball in your hands and making things happen.''

Wilkes said he hopes to make a decision after he takes all his visits.
