Turner's change of mind good for Rutgers

Rutgers filled a need in its future backfield when Edward H. White of Jacksonville (Fla.) running back Casey Turner reversed his field and committed to the Scarlet Knights. Last week Turner termed his commitment to Florida International as a "soft verbal" and said he wanted to wait until signing day to make a decision, but his trip to Rutgers over the weekend seemed perfect so he committed.

There is no secret Rutgers wanted to land at least one running back in the 2010 recruiting class, and the Scarlet Knights did so Monday when Edward H. White of Jacksonville, Fla., workhorse Casey Turner gave a non-binding oral commitment to coach Greg Schiano.

Turner's commitment came a few days after he said he thought he would wait until signing day in February to make a decision, but he saw enough during an official visit to Rutgers to drastically change his timetable.

"I like the way they used Ray Rice at Rutgers,'' Turner said. "That is one of the reasons to take a visit. I really like the coaching staff. I have a good relationship with the coaches.''

Complicating matters and delaying his announcement was Turner's personal situation. He committed to Florida International in late October, and needed to travel home and speak with the coaching staff and his family about his change in decision.

With Rutgers' running back situation in need of depth, Turner could move into the picture quickly. Sophomore Joe Martinek took most of the carries this season, with sophomore Jourdan Brooks falling out of the picture.

When junior Kordell Young suffered a season-ending knee injury, it left freshman De'Antwan Williams as the third running back.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Turner likes to run between the tackles, although he also possesses the speed to get to the outside.

He ran for 1,950 yards as a junior, but churned out 2,400 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior. The Commanders finished the season 8-4.
