And unless there is another twist in his recruitment, Deering will likely make an official visit to Rutgers.
"Most likely I'll go up there on an official visit, but it's not for sure yet,'' the 6-foot, 190-pound Deering said. "If something else comes up that I'm interested in going to see, I'm going to go see it because I've already been to Rutgers.''
If Deering follows through with the visit, he could be part of a large contingent the weekend of Jan. 22, when most of the Scarlet Knights' committed players will be on a trip.
Rutgers' high interest level in Deering was evident when time was taken from a busy St. Petersburg Bowl preparation schedule to send a member of the staff to visit Leto High.
But Deering said not to read too much into his Rutgers interest if he did not take an official visit.
"They're still in it,'' Deering said. "I've already been up there once. They want me to go up there again. I'm seriously considering them. I already went up there and learned about Rutgers and what they're about.''
Deering also spoke about his trip to Illinois.
"It was good,'' he said. "I didn't learn a lot about it because I've already been up there once, but I got to hang out with the players and really get to know them.''
Florida State is a recent newcomer in his recruitment, and there is one reason Deering is heading to Tallahassee, Fla., next month.
"It's a place I'm interested to check out and see what they're about,'' he said.
Before breaking his collarbone in his last game of the season, Deering ran for 812 yards and three touchdowns and added 13 catches for 265 yards and three touchdowns. He underwent surgery, and said his rehab is going well.
