Did Cater commit?

The intriguing recruitment of Riverhead (N.Y.) High linebacker Malcolm Cater continued after his weekend visit to Rutgers. The one-time Syracuse commit has been close to committing to Rutgers for a while, at one time saying "I love Rutgers." But did he commit? And what is going on behind the scenes?

The interesting recruitment of Riverhead (N.Y.) linebacker Malcolm Cater took another strange turn when he gave Rutgers a non-binding oral commitment to play for the Scarlet Knights.

The one-time Syracuse commit and Scout.com's 5th-ranked recruit from New York has long pledged his desire to commit to Rutgers, and finally gave his pledge to be the 16th member of the 2010 class.

However, as of 4 p.m. Monday, Cater was yet to tell his family about the commitment.

"I just talked to his mom and she has no idea about it,'' said Cater's uncle and advisor, Solomon Hatcher.

Cater, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker, told ScarletReport.com in October he may commit during an unofficial visit to watch Rutgers play Pittsburgh, but he didn't make the game because of inclement weather and he had a high school game the next afternoon.

In November, Cater again displayed his desire to be a Scarlet Knight when he said. "I love Rutgers'' while discussing the school.

Cater's coach at Riverhead, Leif Shay, said he was yet to discuss the commitment with Cater, and added, "I don't know if Malcolm knows what he wants to do in the end."

If Cater remains firm in his commitment, Rutgers is getting an outstanding middle linebacker with the ability to challenge for playing time as a freshman.

"He's outstanding, aggressive tackler, very physical,'' Shay said. "His instincts …he knows where the ball is and he is able to track it down.''

ScarletReport.com is scheduled to speak with Cater this evening, and will have an update after that takes place.
