Kenneth Kirksey, a 6-foot-1, 273-pound defensive tackle, told ScarletReport.com two weeks ago Rutgers was his leader, and that remains true. He is also considering Iowa State and Florida International, but is looking forward to learning much more about the Scarlet Knights when he arrives on campus.
"I want to see the team, and if they're together or not,'' Kirksey said. "I want to see how big the campus is, and if the coaches are who they say they are, and make sure they're not fake.''
Kirksey visited Iowa State last week and enjoyed his time there, but still holds Rutgers in higher esteem.
And he gave a reason why.
"Rutgers is a powerhouse team,'' Kirksey said. "I'm going to keep them as my leader until I go up there and check out the place and see what it's like. I'll make my decision from there on.''
Kirksey said he won't announce his decision until signing day on Feb.3 because "I want it to be a surprise.''
However, no matter who lands Kirksey, there are no guarantees he will be on campus for the 2010 season.
One of the reasons Kirksey was looked over by some programs, including his favorite, Florida State, is because of academic issues. He missed a qualifying score on his latest ACT score, so he has turned his focus to March's SATs.
"I believe I'm still going to qualify,'' he said. "I'm going to take the other test. I got a 14 on my ACT. I'm already doing tutoring for the SATs.''
