Rutgers announces 2010 football schedule

Rutgers' 2010 schedule was released, and it includes seven home games, and at least four games to be televised by the ABC/ESPN family of networks. The Scarlet Knights open against Norfolk State and close at West Virginia. They will play games on four days of the week; Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Unlike the past few seasons when Rutgers opened the season with a nationally televised game on Labor Day, the 2010 opener will be much more subdued.

But the Scarlet Knights will conclude the season in what is becoming familiar fashion, by playing West Virginia on the first Saturday of December.

The Scarlet Knights, in conjunction with the Big East Conference, released its schedule today, and it includes at least four games to be broadcast by the ESPN/ABC family.

Rutgers will play seven home games, beginning with the season opener Thursday, Sept. 2, against Football Championship Subdivision Norfolk State.

The Scarlet Knights travel to Florida International to play Saturday, Sept. 11, before a bye week leads into a home contest with North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 25.

The last non-conference home game is Saturday, Oct. 2, against Tulane before the Scarlet Knights host Connecticut six days later. The Friday, Oct. 8, game against the Huskies will be televised by ESPN, with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.

Rutgers then will play Army on Saturday, Oct. 16, in the first major college football game at the new Meadowlands stadium. It is Rutgers home game, but was moved to the Meadowlands for the prestige (and payout) of the event.

From there Rutgers plays only Big East games, beginning with a Saturday, Oct. 23 game at Pittsburgh, and a rare Wednesday (Nov. 3) game at South Florida. That game will kickoff at 7 p.m. and be televised by ESPN2.

Rutgers follows the two road games by hosting Syracuse on Saturday, Nov. 13, and travels to Cincinnati a week later.

The home portion of the schedule concludes Friday, Nov. 26, against Louisville. The game will be televised on the ABC/ESPN family of networks.

The regular season concludes eight days in Morgantown, W.V. The Dec. 4 tilt will mark the third time in five years Rutgers ends the season against the Mountaineers. Again, the ABC/ESPN family will carry the game.

Game times and complete television information will be released at a later date.
