Lumpkin Discusses First Trip to Rutgers

Keith Lumpkin, a 6-foot-9, 265-pound offensive tackle from St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.), has held an offer from Rutgers for nearly two months, but it wasn't until Saturday he had a chance to look at the campus. Lumpkin made an unofficial visit to take in spring practice, then met with the coaching staff and received a tour of the facilities. Find out what he thought of everything inside.

St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) offensive tackle Keith Lumpkin plays 30 minutes from the Rutgers campus, and even played a game at Rutgers Stadium, but Saturday marked his first visit to New Jersey's state university.

Lumpkin attended a practice session, then met with the Scarlet Knights' coaches, got a tour of the facilities, and learned more about the academic reputation of Rutgers.

"That was my first time visiting there,'' the 6-foot-9, 265-pound Lumpkin said. "I enjoyed it. It went really well. It was more than I thought. I really didn't know about them. I just played there the one time, but I didn't to go see around the Hale Center.''

"They showed me around the building. They showed me some of the things they do. They showed me film room stuff. They showed me the weight room, but we didn't go over anything.

Lumpkin said holds more than a dozen offers, including ones from the Scarlet Knights, Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

He wanted to visit Rutgers for a while, and called St. Peter's Prep teammate Savon Huggins so the two could visit together. And there was a reason he wanted to go there.

"I wanted to see how the coaches were in action, so I decided to it was a good opportunity to go to practice and see how they are,'' Lumpkin said. "I thought the coaching staff was very intense, and they're hard on their players.''

Lumpkin said, "yes'' indeed, the coaching style was a good thing.

"It's the next level and my practices are like that, too, so it wasn't surprising,'' Lumpkin said. "I knew it was going to be intense.''

The only other practice Lumpkin is scheduled to see is at South Carolina, where he will be April 9-10.
