Biruta Decides on Whether to Stay at Rutgers

Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti met with St. Benedict's Prep forward and Rutgers signee Gilvydas Biruta on Thursday morning, and a decision was reached as to whether he will stay with Rutgers or look for another school. His status with the Scarlet Knights was in question since former coach Fred Hill was under investigation for off-the-court behavior, which eventually led to his resignation.

Before Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti even hired a coach, the Scarlet Knights landed a top recruit – well, sort of.

Signee Gilvydas Biruta of St. Benedict's Prep of Newark (N.J.) met with Pernetti on Thursday morning, and decided he will remain at Rutgers and not ask to be let out of his national letter of intent, sources close to Biruta said.

Biruta previously asked for his release when former coach Fred Hill was being investigated by the school, citing his lack of a relationship with some members of the coaching staff and the transfer of former St. Benedict's star and Scarlet Knights center Greg Echenique.

The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Biruta is expected to play an integral role with the Scarlet Knights next season, switching between both forward positions.

When he initially asked out of his letter of intent, Biruta was targeting Seton Hall and Maryland as possible destination.

Hill resigned under pressure Monday and assistant Darren Savino is serving as interim coach.
