PF Lewis Addresses His Interest In Rutgers

Rutgers needs basketball players to fill out its roster for the 2011-12 season, and especially in the front court. Last month St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) power forward Greg Lewis was on campus to meet the coaching staff and get a better feel for the program, and he tells whether he is still interested in the Scarlet Knights. Come inside to see what he had to say.

If Greg Lewis' college decision comes down to playing time, Rutgers has a tremendous chance of landing him.

During a visit to Rutgers last month, the 6-foot-8, 225-pound power forward from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, learned what was available if he joined coach Mike Rice's rebuilding effort.

"If I was to go to Rutgers I'd be in good position to play as a freshman and get some key minutes," Lewis said. "They are building a program."

Lewis was on Rutgers' campus last month to get to know Rice, the program and some of the players on the roster. He came away impressed with several aspects of the program, and got a sense for what Rice is demanding from the players already there.

"He definitely knows how to get the best out of the player," Lewis said. "I played a couple of (pickup) games when I was up there, probably played six or seven scrimmages, and the intensity in the scrimmages alone was a lot."

Lewis added he is hearing from Maryland, Rutgers, Villanova and South Florida, and is hearing from the Terrapins staff the most. He holds offers from each school.

"I don't really have any favorites right now," Lewis said. "Hopefully, I can make decision before the fall signing period."

In addition to Rutgers, Lewis also visited Xavier and Maryland, a program he is very familiar with given his proximity to the campus.

"At Xavier, I learned about the player that came out there, players like James Posey," Lewis said. "They've got a good program up there and have success with guys that play my position.

"With Maryland, I'm pretty much trying to build relationships with the coaches. I'm familiar with the style of play, as far as the flex offense. It's just trying to get familiar with the coaches."

Lewis plans to major in sports management, and said "probably the strength of the alumni" in getting a job after college will play the biggest factor in his decision.

The only other visit scheduled for the summer is to South Florida, where Lewis will be in early August.
