Is Rutgers a Serious Challenger for Lumpkin?

St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) offensive tackle Keith Lumpkin trimmed his list of schools to 10 earlier this month, and Rutgers made the cut. But was it because the Scarlet Knights are a viable option, or was it a goodwill recruiting jesture. Lumpkin filled in on his thoughts, and also mentioned something else that is very intriguing regarding his recruitment.

St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) is a fertile recruiting ground these days with class of 2011 running back Savon Huggins, safety Sheldon Royster and offensive tackle Keith Lumpkin all national recruits.

They are also good friends. Lumpkin whittled his list to 10 schools earlier this month, and told the highly rated trio are talking about playing in college together.

All have visited Rutgers numerous times, and the 6-foot-8, 275-pound Lumpkin said there are serious discussions about going to the same school.

"We talk amongst each other," Lumpkin said. "We take everything seriously. We seriously talk about trying to stay together."

Lumpkin's top 10 is Rutgers, Wisconsin, South Florida, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Michigan State, Illinois, Georgia (no offer) and Florida (no offer).

He acknowledged several out-of-state schools, including North Carolina and South Carolina, are high on his list, and explained why.

"North Carolina, I like the campus a lot, the coaching staff, the players. I just got a great vibe," Lumpkin said. "With South Carolina, it's the coaches, the players, the stadium …the campus is nice.

"When they told me the whole town goes straight from work to the game when it's a game night, and I went to the spring game and I saw what they were talking about. The fans kept coming in and coming in. The game was over and they still were coming in."

However, Lumpkin said Rutgers is deep in the mix.

"They're a serious player," he said. "I just like the whole coaching staff there. I go on visits and every time they have a camp or something, I'll go. Everyone in my top 10 is a serious candidate."

Lumpkin camped at Rutgers last month, and made several trips to the school in the spring. He also is looking to make a few more visits in the fall.

"I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my next visit," Lumpkin said. "I'm pretty sure I'll stop by and catch a couple of games."

Lumpkin will trim his list again before making a decision.

"I'm going to take some visits to schools again," he said, "let a couple of games go by, and then I'll probably narrow it down."
