Kone Selects Rutgers

Rutgers new men's basketball coach Mike Rice picked up another oral commitment for the 2011 recruiting class when Malick Kone gave a non-binding oral commitment to play for the Scarlet Knights. The 6-foot-6, 185-pound wing made the call as he readies for an official visit to Rutgers early next month.

Recruiting is all about relationships. Mike Rice and Rutgers had a strong relationship with 6-foot-6, 185-pound wing Malick Kone and that was enough to seal a verbal commitment.

"I have relationship with coach [David] Cox," Kone told Scout.com. "I believe in coach Cox and coach Rice. Rutgers has a good program. They are serious about basketball and school."

"When [coach Cox] was at Georgetown he started to recruit me," he added. "Then he moved to Rutgers. I respect coach Cox. He never gave up recruiting me."

Kone is coming off a strong summer with the DC Assault program. Following he July he picked up serious interest from Virginia, Virginia Tech, East Carolina and Jacksonville.

"I think when I get to Rutgers a lot of people are going to be surprised when they see me play," Kone said. "I'm going to try and lead Rutgers through the Big East and into the NCAAs."

Kone, a standout at Dycks (Va.) Blue Ridge, is Rutger's second verbal commitment in the 2011 class. He joins four-star prospect Derrick Randall.
