Shalicia Hurns screamed wildly, but the Rutgers junior couldn't pinpoint why. There were just too many reasons to be excited when the Scarlet Knights learned last night they earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
There was the seed -- No. 4 in the Midwest Region.
Rutgers: Knights' turnaround rewarded

Only three Rutgers players -- McCullouch, Shalicia Hurns and Mauri Horton -- have NCAA Tournament experience. So the pressure has fallen on them to prepare their teammates for their first-round matchup against Western Kentucky (22-8) on Saturday in Athens, Ga. Rutgers (20-7) received the No. 4 seed in the Midwest Region yesterday, when the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee handed out bids.

It took four minutes for ESPN's NCAA Tournament Selection Show to announce the Rutgers women's basketball team as a No. 4 seed Sunday night. The Scarlet Knights (20-7) will meet 13th-seeded Western Kentucky (22-8) in the opening round of the Midwest Region on Saturday at Stegman Coliseum in Athens, Ga. Game time has yet to be determined.

Leading theteam back to prominence was Big East Rookie of the Year Cappie Pondexter.Pondexter, a sophomore guard, averaged 18.4 points and 4.8 assists per game this season.Shealso tied for second on the team in rebounding, grabbing just under five a game (4.9).

Steve Normane's two-run home run in the 12th inning helped lift Rutgers to an 8-7 victory over Miami on Sunday, ending the Hurricanes' season-best eight-game winning streak. Normane, who singled to lead off a six-run seventh-inning Rutgers outburst, was 3-for-6 with two runs scored in the game. Entering Sunday, Normane was hitting just 1-for-17 (.059) this season.

Big East Basketball

Six Big East schools, including Villanova and its suspension-limited roster, head the 40-team field for the National Invitation Tournament. Five other conferences -- the Atlantic 10, Atlantic Coast, Conference USA, Big Ten and Mountain West -- all had three teams chosen for the tournament, which gets under way Monday night and concludes with the championship game at Madison Square Garden on April 3.
