July’s first live recruiting period wrapped up on Sunday afternoon. I spent the day at the Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown, where St. Joe’s had head coach Phil Martelli and assistant Dave Duda. The first full day of July’s first live recruiting period saw dozens of college coaches descending on Philadelphia University for the Elevate Hoops Icebreaker. St. Joe’s head coach Phil Martelli, along with assistant coach Mark Bass, were among the coaches that packed the gym. 2017 Hawk commit Taylor Funk, 2018 offer Allen Bertrand, 2019 offer Isaiah Wong, and others impressed.

Virginia Academy (VA) junior big man Ejike Obinna made a name for himself last summer on the AAU circuit with the Uncommon Bulls. Following a strong high school season, Obinna is now being tracked heavily by schools from just about every conference in America. He recently hosted six colleges for in-home visits. Kenwood Academy (IL) wing Nick Robinson took his first official visit earlier this week when he traveled east to Philadelphia and visited Saint Joseph's. The athletic wing guard visited St. Joe's and has an official visit to Cal planned for this week. St. Joe's is coming off a banner year. The Hawks won the Atlantic 10 tournament, beat Cincinnati in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, and won the second most games in school history. At 9:40 Eastern Sunday night, Phil Martelli's St. Joe's Hawks and Dana Altman's (pictured) Oregon Ducks will square off in Spokane, Washington with a trip to the Sweet 16 in Anaheim on the line. Oregon, the number 1 seed out west, cruised to a 91-52 opening-round win over Holy Cross, while St. Joe's won in dramatic fashion, 78-76 over Cincinnati. With just under two minutes to play in Sunday's Atlantic 10 championship game, Lamarr Kimble whipped a no-look pass to DeAndre Bembry, slashing to the rim. Bembry rose up and threw down a monstrous two-handed dunk to give the Hawks an 85-70 lead, and send them on their way to their second Atlantic 10 championship in three years. A full recap is inside.

In the closing seconds of the first half, St. Joe's junior DeAndre Bembry raced down the court and half-slammed, half-guided the ball down as the buzzer sounded. The play received little fanfare from Bembry, his teammates, or coaches. Even after the basket, the Hawks trailed George Washington by 14, 49-35 at the half. That play was just a taste of what was to come. however, for Bembry's Hawks.

On February 3rd, Mark Schmidt's Saint Bonaventure team marched into Hagan Arena and ran a shooting clinic on St. Joe's.
