This week, Hawk Hill Hardwood caught up with Findlay Prep assistant coach Todd Simon and got the latest on Matt's game and his recruitment.
"Matt's a skilled, athletic 7 footer who can face up and shoot or play off the dribble," Coach Simon explained. He does not use the term 7 footer loosely either. According to Simon, Matt Willms checks in at 7 feet and 205 pounds.
There is one thing about Matt's game that stands out to Simon, and that is his "ability to consistently play hard." According to Simon, "Matt loves to be in the gym. He's a joy to work with because he can change his habits and is willing to do whatever is asked of him."
Due to his height and his non-stop motor, Matt has a lot to offer on the court. However, there is an area for improvement, according to his coach.
"He needs to continue to fill into his frame, which will come as his body matures." Matt has demonstrated a willingness to do that at Findlay, "working hard in the weight room."
The move to Findlay has benefited Matt in two ways. First of all, according to Coach Simon, "the day-to-day competition here is really helping in his acceleration."
Secondly, Matt has seen his recruiting pick up and intensify since the move to Findlay. There are a number of schools currently involved in the seven footer's recruitment, including Saint Joseph's.
"He has visited Texas A&M and Saint Joseph's unofficially," Simon stated. "He has also visited UNLV unofficially." In addition to those three schools, Simon listed Marquette, Minnesota, San Diego State, and Kansas as other schools in the mix.
Matt Willms took his official visit to Saint Joseph's the first weekend in September. In fact, his visit was the same weekend as Isaiah Miles' official. Miles was the first 2012 Hawk commitment.
Willms is still available, and the Hawks are still in the market for a big in the 2012 class. Whether Matt ends up on Hawk Hill remains to be seen, but the talented center would be a major acquisition for whatever school he ultimately selects.
