Last Friday, Saint Joseph's Prep fell to Philadelphia Catholic League rival Neumann-Goretti at The Prep. Saint Joseph's assistant coach Geoff Arnold was among the coaches on hand. The Hawks are currently involved in the recruitment of Saint Joseph's Prep junior guard Miles Overton, who had 14 points in the game. Saint Joseph's is also involved with Neumann sophomore point guard Ja'Quan Newton. Newton was terrific in the winning effort, scoring a team-high 15 points. Both Neumann and Saint Joseph's Prep have playoff games today.
On Saturday night, a new name appeared on the Saint Joseph's recruiting scene. 2014 Mt. Saint Joseph (MD) shooting guard Phil Booth attended SJU's win over UMass. The night before, Booth had 15 points for the Gaels in a huge win over city rival John Carroll (MD). Booth is widely regarded as one of the better players in the 2014 class in the Baltimore area.
Last Sunday, Saint Joseph's head coach Phil Martelli watched Timber Creek (NJ) combo forward Dominique Reid. Reid, a tough-minded, versatile, 6'7 forward had 23 points and 17 rebounds in the loss. Reid has been a Saint Joseph's target for quite some time, and attended the Hawks' home win over UMass last Saturday. Reid played his freshman year at Philadelphi's Neumann-Goretti, his sophomore year at Trenton Catholic (NJ), and is now playing at home at Timber Creek.
After watching Reid, Martelli drove north in the state of New Jersey to watch another 2013 forward. This time it was Saint Benedict's Prep (NJ) forward Isaiah Watkins. After watching Watkins play, the Saint Joseph's head coach offered up a scholarship to the athletic Canadian import. Between Reid and Watkins, it appears that the staff is prepared to possibly take two bigs in the class of 2013. In addition to Reid and Watkins, the Saint Joseph's staff is very actively recruiting Philadelphia Electric (PA) big-bodied post Jai Williams.
On Friday evening, Saint Anthony (NJ) traveled to South Jersey to take on Bishop Eustace. Phil Martelli was on hand at Eustace, checking out Saint Anthony junior shooting guard Hallice Cooke. Cooke is a shooting guard who has the ability to knock down shots from the perimeter. Saint Joseph's has hosted Cooke on multiple unofficial visits, and Hallice has also been on Hawk Hill this year to watch the Hawks in action.
On Saturday afternoon, the Philadelphia Public League semifinals will take place at Southern and Ben Franklin High Schools. 2013 Saint Joseph's targets Jai Williams, Rysheed Jordan, and Jeremiah Worthem are all in action, as well as 2014 target Malik Starkes.
