Phil Martelli Interview: Part C

In the third and final installment of Hawk Hill Hardwood's interview series with Hawk head coach Phil Martelli, the head Hawk discusses the particulars surrounding the two upcoming recruiting classes. While he is unable to speak about specific players, he did explain what the recruiting philosophy was, what the staff was looking for, and the new recruiting calendar.

At the moment, Saint Joseph's 2013 recruiting class, that is the class of rising high school seniors, is still vacant. The Saint Joseph's staff has a very clear idea of what they are looking for in that class, however. "We're looking for three in the next class (2013)," Martelli stated. "We want a wing and two frontcourt players."

This 2013 recruiting class would arrive on Hawk Hill in a year when the only graduating player would be high-scoring guard Tay Jones. The team would return, barring any early departures or transfers, everyone else from the 2012-2013 squad.

In 2014, the staff has many more shoes to fill, as Halil Kanacevic, Ron Roberts, Langston Galloway, C.J. Aiken, and Daryus Quarles will all be graduating. "That 2014 class, we are going to need one of everything," detailed Martelli. "We will need guards, wings, bigs, just everything across the board." Martelli went on, saying that he "felt really good" about where the Hawks stood, early, in that 2014 class with so many scholarships to play with. While the Hawks still have to fill three spots in 2013, the coach did say that everything with 2014 recruiting was "absolutely up and running."

Recently, the NCAA passed a new law permitting college coaches to have unlimited texting with recruits beginning on June 15th of their junior years. That means that the class of 2014, where the Hawks will be looking for five commitments, is free for unlimited contact. "I like the law," said the head coach. "With the phone calls and texting, we as a staff have been aggressive."

The recruiting calendar this year also changed, with a new April Live Period being added, and July being changed from two to three live periods. "April was great. It was really positive," Martelli explained. "We were able to take the time to identify and evaluate guys."

That time in April to identify and evaluate, according to Martelli, will pay dividends in July. Now instead of using the first July period to evaluate, the staff was able to hone in on their top targets. Martelli explained that the coaching staff has "a clear order of guys" in the 2013 and 2014 classes in their minds, thanks to past recruiting, combined with April.

July now has three live periods. "I was at four places last time and will be at four more this time," he stated. "Then next week (the third live period) is a real challenge. You have events in Orlando, Vegas, and Atlantic City (NJ). And with Vegas and the travel, you basically lose an entire day. That presents some challenges for us as a staff, trying to figure out who will be where when."

Over the coming weeks, and certainly in the next month or two, the Hawks will begin filling their 2013 scholarships. Soon after, it wouldn't be a surprise at all, if a 2014 verbal commitment or two appeared. The Saint Joseph's coaching staff knows what they're looking for in these coming two classes, and now you do as well.
