Sam Dingba, a 6'6 native of Cameroon, took four official visits this fall before ultimately deciding to reclassify to the class of 2014. Sam visited Saint Joseph's, Saint Bonaventure, Quinnipiac, and Boston University officially this fall.
"I still struggle with my English and I need to improve my reading before going to college," said the Cameroon native. "I started to think about it after the first few weeks of school this year and I spoke with Coach Joe Touomou about it. He said that it could only help me with my studies." Touomou, who played college ball at Georgetown and has directed many African and European players to the United States, sent Dingba to Salisbury at the beginning of his sophomore year. "When Coach Ruskin, Coach G (Salisbury assistant coach Anthony Goins) and Coach Butch (Graves of the AAU Westchester Hawks) agreed, I knew I would do a post-graduate year at Salisbury."
Sam moved to the US in 10th grade, and prior to his arrival in the States, he did not speak English at all.
"I tell people that basketball is the third best part of Samuel," added Jeff Ruskin. "Samuel, the person, is the best. His work ethic and study habits come next, and then basketball."
Ruskin elaborated on what this meant for Saint Joseph's in terms of their recruitment of Samuel. "I had a wonderful conversation yesterday with Coach Martelli, who is always a class act," the coach began. "He seemed to be very supportive of Samuel, especially knowing the type of young man that he is and how dedicated he is to his academics."
The Hawks are still actively recruiting a number of players in the class of 2013. At the moment, SJU only has 6'9 Philadelphia post Jai Williams signed in that class. The Hawks are planning to use five scholarships in 2014, so Samuel Dingba is likely to remain a top target for the Hawks, even with his reclassification.
