Coach talks about newest Hawk

On Sunday evening, senior wing DeAndre Bembry announced his college decision. The 6'6 wing is headed to Phil Martelli and the St. Joe's Hawks. Bembry's high school coach, Chris Chavannes, spoke yesterday with Hawk Hill Hardwood about his talented senior.

DeAndre Bembry became Saint Joseph's second 2013 pledge on Sunday evening when he made public his commitment to the Hawks. He joins 6'9 Philadelphia Electric post Jai Williams. The Patrick School (NJ) head coach Chris Chavannes spoke with Hawk Hill Hardwood about what DeAndre will bring to Hawk Hill.

"Saint Joseph's, and coach Phil Martelli, will be getting a person who is not defined to one position," Chavannes began. "DeAndre is a student-athlete. He is a versatile player on both ends of the floor."

Early on in his high school career, DeAndre played on the block, where he was productive due to his size and athleticism. Over the past two years, his game has shifted to the perimeter, where he is a more-than-capable ball-handler and perimeter shooter. His strength lies in his motor and his athleticism, as Chris Chavannes explained.

"He is super competitive," Chavannes continued. "He has managed to refine his athleticism and combine this asset with the fundamentals of basketball, resulting in him becoming a more polished player."

Coach Chavannes went on, saying, "He was most known as an effective low-post player with his back to the basket. He has now improved to the point where he is as effective facing the basket as he is with his back to the basket."

This year is the first year of The Patrick School, as it is known by that name. The school was formerly known as Saint Patrick's. Over recent history, a number of college and NBA stars got their start at St. Pat's. Notable alumni Kyrie Irving, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Dexter Strickland, and Corey Fisher all attended St. Pat's over the past decade. That is an impressive list of players, which is not lost on DeAndre.

"He works hard because he's aware our of school's basketball lineage, and his responsibility to continue that lineage," stated Coach Chavannes.

The Patrick School begins the 2012-2013 season on December 14th against Roselle Catholic, and play again the following day against a talented Gill St. Bernard squad. DeAndre Bembry, with his recent pledge to Phil Martelli and the Hawks, will continue the school's tradition of producing quality collegiate student-athletes.
