Shep Garner, a 6'1 guard at Philadelphia's Roman Catholic High School, has been a well-known name in recruiting circles since his freshman year. Now, midway through his junior year, things are starting to round into shape with his recruitment.
"At this point, it's who's coming out to your games," Roman head coach Chris McNesby began. "Who's investing their time? Which coaches, which head coaches, are coming out to see you?"
Over the summer, Garner spoke with Hawk Hill Hardwood, listing "St. Joe's, Florida, and Miami" as the schools coming at him the hardest. That list has changed a bit, according to Coach McNesby, with only one school from that list still very much in the mix.
"St. Joe's is showing the most attention right now," McNesby continued on Sunday. "St. Joe's is at the forefront of his recruitment." McNesby listed Penn State and Rutgers as the other main schools involved at the moment.
At right around 6'1, Garner plays both on and off the ball for Roman Catholic. He plays alongside talented sophomore Traci Carter and fellow junior Rashann London in the Cahilite backcourt. All three players handle time both at the point as well as off the ball.
St. Joe's is likely looking to sign at least two guards in the class of 2014. Shep Garner has long been one of the Hawks' top targets. His play this season has been steady. Garner poured in 22 last Sunday in an impressive win at Archbishop Carroll (PA). He had 17 in a tough one-point loss to Miami commit Davon Reed and Princeton Day School (NJ).
While a decision does not appear to be imminent from Garner, St. Joe's has positioned themselves well, along with Rutgers and Penn State, for the talented scoring guard.
