Hawks dish out offers

Sunday was the final day of April's second Live Period. College coaches must now wait until July to hit the road and recruit. In the meantime, colleges from coast to coast have used the first half of this week to extend offers in the 2014 and 2015 classes. On Tuesday night, St. Joe's offered six 2014 targets and a single member in the class of 2015.

2014 St. Anthony (NJ) point guard Tarin Smith told Hawk Hill Hardwood that he picked up an offer from St. Joe's on Tuesday night. The 6'1 point guard runs with Sports U's 17u team on the AAU circuit alongside SJU targets Jared Nickens and Wade Baldwin. Saint Joseph's coaches Phil Martelli and Geoff Arnold both watched Sports U over the weekend at the Hoop Group Philly Jam Fest. Smith told Hawk Hill Hardwood that "Coach Martelli called and offered me last night." Tarin Smith is a true floor general who defends, distributes, and plays with trademark St. Anthony intensity.

Another player that Martelli and Arnold watched over the weekend was 6'8 Team Loaded (NC) combo forward Zane Waterman. Waterman's Team Loaded squad won the 17u title at the Philly Jam Fest. Out of Fayetteville Academy (NC), Waterman is a 6'8 forward who has seen a mixture of mid-major and high-major interest thus far.

A third player that participated in this weekend's Philly Jam Fest is Baltimore's Finest junior forward Tariq Owens. A 6'9 jumping jack, Owens was watched in an early game Saturday by SJU assistant coach Geoff Arnold. Temple head coach Fran Dunphy was also watching the 6'9 forward, and Temple is one of the main schools involved with Owens. Other schools in the mix with Tariq are VCU, Miami, NC State, Villanova, and more. Raw offensively, Owens is rail thin, but possesses high-major athleticism and is a big-time rim protector.

Saint Joseph's already had offers out to two Team Takeover juniors in Tre Campbell and Martin Geben. On Tuesday evening, the Hawks offered two more. St. Joe's offered 6'4 wing guard James Palmer and 6'7 wide-bodied post Quadree Smith. Palmer has seen his stock skyrocket in recent days, and for good reason. He had a huge weekend in Hampton with Team Takeover, highlighted by 18 points in 17 minutes against Indy Spiece Saturday. Palmer is 6'7 and listed by many sites to be in the 275-pound range.

The sixth 2014 player to pick up an offer on Tuesday was 2014 New York guard Shavar Newkirk. A 5'11 point guard who runs with Team Scan, Newkirk is a pass-first point guard who plays with vintage New York toughness and confidence. Newirk plays alongside 2014 SJU targets Rashard Figures and Terry Larrier.

In addition to the 2014 offers, St. Joe's also dished out an offer to a standout in the class of 2015. 2015 Life Center Academy (NJ) guard Malik Ellison picked up an offer from the head Hawk, Phil Martelli, while on Hawk Hill for an unofficial visit.

Saint Joseph's has at least four scholarships to play with in the 2014 class. It will be an active spring and summer on Hawk Hill.
