July Preview

To the casual college basketball fan, labeling July as one of the most critical months of the year seems absurd. However, to those that follow the ins-and-outs of college basketball recruiting, the significance of July can't be overstated. Today, Hawk Hill Hardwood previews July's Live Periods.

There are three ‘live' periods this July. The first runs from July 10th through the 14th. The second live period is from the 16th to the 21st. The month closes with a live period that lasts from the 24th through the 28th. The live periods provide college coaches an opportunity to make their presence felt with priority 2014 recruits. It also gives coaches a chance to look ahead to the 2015 and 2016 classes.

At the moment, Saint Joseph's is actively involved with dozens, and I mean dozens, of 2014 recruits. The coaching staff will be tracking them during July at events up and down the eastern seaboard.

The biggest name event of the summer is the Nike Peach Jam, which takes place July 11th through the 14th in South Carolina. Team Takeover, Team Final, Team Scan, and the NJ Playaz, are among the teams playing of interest to the Hawks. The Hawks are looking at 2014's James Palmer, Quadree Smith, and Martin Geben from Team Takeover. On Team Final, 2014 Berks Catholic (PA) forward Nana Foulland is a player that the Hawks are keeping tabs on. Cardinal Hayes (NY) rising senior Shavar Newkirk, a 5'11 point guard, just visited Hawk Hill last weekend. Finally, the Playaz feature 6'4 guard Elijah Cain, a rising senior at Medford Tech (NJ). South Carolina is certainly a place that the SJU coaching staff will be camped out the beginning of July.

At the same time that the Peach Jam is taking place in South Carolina, closer to Hawk Hill, the Reebok Classic Breakout will be at Philadelphia University from July 9th through the 12th. Complete rosters for this event have yet to be released, but early committed players include 2014 St. Anthony (NJ) point guard Tarin Smith, 2015 Haverford School (PA) wing guard Sean Lloyd, and 2015 Patterson Mill (MD) wing CJ Keyser. Smith and Lloyd both hold offers from Phil Martelli and the Hawks, while Keyser has already taken an early visit to Hawk Hill.

The Hoop Group, year in and year out, puts together some of the best AAU events of the spring and summer. This year should be no different. The Summer Classic East will be held July 17th and 18 while he Summer Jam Fest will run from July 19th through the 21st. Both events will take place at Competitive Edge Sports in King of Prussia, PA. Teams and schedules for both events have yet to be posted. Last year, Sports U, New Heights, DC Assault, the Westchester Hawks, and more turned in solid performances at both events.

Hawk Hill Hardwood will have coverage of a number of July's events. We will be at the Reebok Classic Breakout, as well as both local Hoop Group events. In addition to our coverage here, the Scout national team will be covering the Peach Jam and more.
