Monday morning roundup

On Sunday evening, the Hawks departed for a ten-day, four-game trip to Italy. Inside, read about visits slated for two 2014 recruiting targets, and more.

Phil Martelli and the Hawks are currently in Rome, after departing Sunday night for Italy. St. Joe's will spend ten days in Italy, playing four games and touring a number of Italian cities. While the Hawks are abroad, visits are on hold. However, when they return on August 21st, things should pick up quickly.

Last week, 2014 shooting guard James Demery told Hawk Hill Hardwood that he had scheduled an official visit to St. Joe's. That visit will begin on Thursday, September 5th. Demery is down to St. Joe's, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Creighton, and Miami. Miami recently picked up commitments from combo guard JaQuan Newton and shooting guard James Palmer, however, so it will be interesting to see if the Canes remain on Demery's list.

On Sunday night, Southwest Illinois Jets coach Dana Morgan informed Hawk Hill Hardwood that 6'5 shooting guard Peyton Allen has a date set for his official visit to SJU. Allen will trek to Hawk Hill on September 12th for his official visit.

As of now, those are the only concrete dates that I am aware of for visits. 6'8 Fayetteville (NC) combo forward Zane Waterman took his official visit to St. Joe's back in June. He still has the Hawks on his list. 5'11 point guard Shavar Newkirk visited SJU unofficially in June as well, before committing to the Hawks in July. As of now, Newkirk is the Hawks' lone 2014 commitment.

Last week, the coaching staff hosted a handful of unofficial visitors. 2014 target Ben Bentil attended last Tuesday's scrimmage alongside classmate Austin Tilghman and AAU teammate Derrick Jones. Jones, a top 25 2015 wing, visited SJU twice last week.

Two 2015 Team Final members also took unofficials to Hawk Hill last week as well. 5'11 Neumann Goretti (PA) point guard Lamarr Kimble and 6'6 Constitution (PA) wing Ahmad Gilbert watched the Hawks practice for the Italy trip.

Top 50 2014 center Paschal Chukwu visited Providence unofficially on Sunday. He is being recruited the hardest by Providence and St. Joe's, with UConn and a few others also involved. Chukwu has taken two unofficial visits to SJU and will likely take an official in the coming month.

While it will likely remain relatively quiet on the recruiting front while the Hawks are abroad, Hawk Hill Hardwood will still have updates regarding lists and impending visits.
