Player Profile: Javon Baumann

Javon Baumann's arrival on Hawk Hill last year came as a surprise to many, as he was not a household name, coming from Gemany. After redshirting last season, Baumann is ready to contribute for the Hawks this season in the frontcourt. Assistant coach Dave Duda spoke with Hawk Hill Hardwood about the 6'9, 260-pound big man.

Javon Baumann arrived at St. Joe's last season from Theodor-Heus School in Solms-Olberbiel, Germany. Last season, Javon redshirted, and the year appeared to benefit him, going up against the likes of C.J. Aiken, Ron Roberts, and Halil Kanacevic daily in practice.

"Javon has made great strides," Hawk assistant coach Dave Duda began. Duda is the big man coach at SJU, and has worked extensively with Baumann over the past year. "He has great strength and runs the floor," he continued.

Expectations for Javon this season, from both the coaching staff and fans, are probably right around where they should be. He will be counted on to provide energy and rebounding off the bench, giving Roberts and Kanacevic breathers. "We're working hard on finishing around the basket and free throw shooting," Duda stated.

Throughout practices over the past year, Baumann has demonstrated toughness and sneaky athleticism, as well as impressive lateral quickness and foot speed. At 260 pounds, he's a load on the low block and is relentless on the glass. While he will not likely get touches in the post, his ability to corral offensive rebounds will earn him put-back dunks and trips to the free throw line. Hence, Coach Duda's comments about finishing at the rim and at the line.

While he has steadily improved during his time on Hawk Hill, Duda noted that "Javon has to keep things moving in a positive direction each day."

Ron Roberts and Halil Kanacevic will be your two frontcourt starters for the Hawks this season, with Javon and Isaiah Miles likely the first two off the bench. While still raw offensively, Baumann has the size, strength, and motor to be a contributing big in the Atlantic 10 this season, especially on the boards.

Javon Baumann was one of two Hawks that redshirted last season. The other, Ohio point guard Kyle Molock, is up tomorrow in our player profile series.
