Phil Martelli and his coaching staff are actively involved with a handful of local recruits in the 2015 class. St. Joe's Prep (PA) shooting guard Chris Clover and Neumann-Goretti (PA) point guard Lamarr Kimble were on campus earlier this month. Archbishop Carroll (PA) post Ernest Aflakpui was on campus this spring as well. Today, the coaching staff hosted Ewing (NJ) wing guard Trey Lowe on an unofficial visit.
Lowe holds offers from the likes of Rutgers, Seton Hall, Temple, St. Joe's, and more to go along with heavy interest from Villanova and VCU. Trey switched over from We R-1 to Nike's Team Final this year, following a highly successful junior season at Ewing. His stock has soared this winter and spring thanks, in part to a growth spurt that saw him shoot from roughly 6'2 to a legitimate 6'5-plus.
Trey Lowe and Lamarr Kimble, teammates on Team Final, will play together in the Peach Jam in July. Prior to traveling south, the two will play at the Reebok Classic Breakout July 8th through the 11th. This annual showcase event happens during the first July live period at Philadelphia University. It's a great opportunity for local Hawk fans to catch a handful of 2015 and 2016 recruiting targets. In addition to Lowe and Kimble, Chris Clover, C.J. Keyser, and more will be participating. I will have full coverage of the event.
St. Joe's 2014 recruiting class is one that has garnered accolades for being one of the best in the Atlantic 10. The four-man class consists of point guard Shavar Newkirk, wing guard James Demery, power forward Markell Lodge, and center Obi Romeo. That class is scheduled to arrive on Hawk Hill this weekend. Summer school begins next week, and at that time the team will be permitted to hold workouts. I will be making my way over to campus to check in with the 2014-2015 Hawks on June 30th.
Turning back to recruiting, last Sunday, the 15th, was the first day that college coaches were permitted to directly contact 2016 recruits. Expectedly, Twitter was ablaze with which recruits were being contacted by which colleges last Sunday and Monday. Most calls this week were simply to express interest. One local prospect, however, picked up a St. Joe's offer on Thursday.
2016 Friends Central (PA) wing forward DeAndre Hunter was offered by St. Joe's head coach Phil Martelli on Thursday afternoon after he played on Hawk Hill as part of the St. Joe's high school team camp. The offer was first reported by City of Basketball Love's Josh Verlin. Hunter is already a hot commodity, with offers from NC State, URI, and La Salle in addition to the Hawks.
A full list of 2016 recruits contacted by the St. Joe's coaching staff can be found on the Hawk's Nest message board. I will have more information on Trey Lowe's unofficial visit to St. Joe's on site tomorrow as well.
