2014-2015 season kicks off Saturday morning

On Saturday morning, the St. Joe's Hawks, your defending Atlantic 10 champions, will begin practice for the 2014-2015 season. The practice schedule, plus more, can all be found inside.

Your 2014-2015 Saint Joseph's Hawks will have their first practice of the season on Saturday morning at Hagan Arena. Practice, which is open to the public, will run from 10 AM to 1 PM inside Hagan. The Hawks will then have off Sunday and Tuesday. Practices on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will run from 3:30-6:30. Aside from Monday's practices, which will take place in the practice gym, all others will be inside Hagan Arena.

This year's team is going to have a totally different feel, and face, than those of the past few years. Head coach Phil Martelli watched starters Ronald Roberts, Halil Kanacevic, and Langston Galloway graduate last spring. Swingman Daryus Quarles also graduated. The only returning starters are senior point guard Chris Wilson and sophomore wing DeAndre Bembry.

With Wilson and Bembry as the only returning known quantities, this year's Hawk team enters the season with a plethora of question marks. The coaching staff has brought in an extremely talented recruiting class, consisting of 6'5 shooting guard James Demery, 6'7 power forward Markell Lodge, 5'11 point guard Shavar Newkirk, and 6'9 shot-blocking post Obi Romeo. In addition, the Hawks will have West Virginia wing transfer Aaron Brown and 6'9 redshirt freshman Jai Williams eligible.

That makes six newcomers on this year's St. Joe's team. Sophomore Javon Baumann, who played sparingly in his freshman year, has the most collegiate experience of all the centers on the roster. Then, at the 4 spot, senior Papa Ndao and junior Isaiah Miles will be battling for minutes. On a team lacking shooters, if either of them are able to provide a spark, and knock down shots from deep, it will be welcome.

I will be at Saturday's practice, and will post complete recaps next week. The player profile series will also begin next week. Lastly, Hawk Hill Hardwood's second video interview with Hawk head coach Phil Martelli will be taking place later this month. Now that the calendar has turned, and October is upon us, things here are about to kick up a notch.
