July Recruiting Primer

The hectic July recruiting calendar kicks off next Wednesday, July 8th, in the form of the first live recruiting period of the summer. Over the course of the month, there are three live periods. Inside, Hawk Hill Hardwood previews the month’s biggest events and identifies where SJU’s top 2016 and 2017 recruiting targets will be playing.

The first live period runs from July 8th through the 12th. Closest to Hawk Hill is Hoop Group’s Elite Camp Session 1. The only Hawk target that I know for a fact is playing there is 2016 combo guard Jeff Dowtin. Dowtin, a 6’3 guard, currently holds a Hawk offer.

One of the biggest events of the first live period is the Nike Peach Jam. A host of 2016 and 2017 Hawk targets will be there, and the SJU coaching staff will also be well represented there. In the class of 2016, Kevin Marfo of BABC (offer), Dylan Painter of Team Final (offer), Christian Vital of the PSA Cardinals (offer), Anthony Lamb of Albany City Rocks (offer), and more will be participating.

While Nike is hosting the Peach Jam, Under Armour is hosting their All-American camp in Charlotte. A number of St. Joe’s targets play on the Under Armour circuit, including 2016 commit Charles Brown. A list of attendees for that event is not yet available though.

While Under Armour has their All American camp, in Philadelphia, Elevate Hoops is putting on The Showdown. Last year, a plethora of Under Armour teams played here, so it’s possible that this happens again. I will be there July 11th and 12th hoping to catch teams such as Philly Pride, Sports U, We R 1, and more. Again, nothing is available online yet here.

This takes us to the second live period, which runs from July 15th through the 19th. Under Armour’s Finals are the main event here. Charles Brown and DeAndre Hunter (Philly Pride), Spencer Littleton (1 Nation), DC Premier (A.J. Wilson), Jeff Dowtin (DC Blue Devils), Taurean Thompson (Sports U), Zach Kent, Eric Ayala, Quade Green (We R 1), and more will be there. This is a huge event for the coaching staff to look at both 2016 and 2017 targets. They will be keeping a close eye on Brown while also making it abundantly clear to DeAndre Hunter that he is desperately wanted on Hawk Hill.

Nike’s EYBL wraps up with the Peach Jam, but Nike keeps things going during the second live period with the Ty Lawson/Vic Oladipo Camp in Maryland. All the EYBL guys mentioned above, like Marfo, Vital, Painter, et al will likely be playing here. So, while the coaches are in Atlanta for Under Armour, they will have to keep a set of eyes in Maryland as well.

Smaller events, like Hoop Group’s Jam Fest and the Big Shots events are also going on during the first and second live periods.

The month wraps up with the third live period July 22nd through the 26th. One event that I know I will be covering during this time is the Battle of the Borders, put on by We R 1 and hosted at Life Center Academy the 22h through the 24th. We R 1 has 2017 Hawk targets Eric Ayala, Quade Green, Kodye Pugh, and Zach Kent. Philly Pride is expected to participate as well, which will give me my one chance during the month to see Charles Brown and DeAndre Hunter.

Another local event during this third live period is the Elevate Hoops Summer Final. Team Final is typically here, as well as a number of other high-level teams. This will happen in King of Prussia, PA July 25th and 26th.

As you can see, July is a hectic month. This is far from a perfect preview. But, frankly, it’s nearly impossible to have a perfect preview when so many of the camps and events don’t update their schedules until a day or two ahead. I will continue to update you both here and on The Hawks’ Nest message board. And I will have as much in-person, live coverage as I can provide from the region, while national scouts Evan Daniels, Brian Snow, and Rob Harrington cover the Under Armour and Nike events.
