8/16 Recruiting Round-Up

On Sunday evening, within about an hour of one another, two of St. Joe's top 2016 recruiting targets released trimmed college lists. The good news for Hawk fans is that both DeAndre Hunter (pictured) and Kevin Marfo included St. Joe's on the lists. The bad news? The lists are long and filled with high-level competition.

6'7 Friends' Central (PA) and Philly Pride wing forward DeAndre Hunter picked up a St. Joe's offer last June and has been one of the Hawks' top 2016 targets ever since. Over the summer, his stock absolutely exploded due to his strong play on the AAU circuit with Philly Pride. On Sunday night, he trimmed his list via Twitter, including the Hawks among his final eleven. His list reads as follows: Arizona State, UConn, SMU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, St. Joe's, Villanova, Virginia, Maryland, Miami, and Alabama.

Miami and St. Joe's are two schools that Hunter claimed all summer long had been recruiting him the longest and hardest. Both made the cut. That being said, schools like Virginia, Maryland, Villanova, and Notre Dame all offered at the end of July, and all appear to be schools under very serious consideration. He has already taken unofficial visits to St. Joe's, Villanova, and Maryland. It will be interesting to see what the next step for Hunter is, considering his list is still so long. Will he trim it yet again or simply plan a handful of official visits and go from there? His terrific play in July opened up many doors for him.

6'8 Worcester Academy (MA) power forward Kevin Marfo also trimmed his list Sunday night, and like Hunter, also has double-digit schools remaining. Adam Finkelstein of ESPN was the first to report his list of: Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Boston College, UMass, St. Joe's, DePaul, George Washington, Rhode Island, and Providence. His list of ten includes the ACC (Pitt, GT, BC), the Big 10 (Minnesota), the Big East (DePaul and Providence), and the A10 (SJU, GW, URI, UMass). Like Hunter, the competition here for the Hawks is stiff.

Marfo is a North Jersey native, though he is attending prep school in Massachusetts and played his AAU ball for BABC, a Boston-area travel squad. He attended Bergen Catholic (NJ) prior to transferring north, and while at Bergen Catholic, he played one year alongside current St. Joe's freshman Pierfrancesco Oliva.

DeAndre Hunter and Kevin Marfo join Dylan Painter, Frankie Hughes, and Myles Powell on a list of 2016 recruits that have included St. Joe's on their narrowed college lists. Others, like Christian Vital, Carson Williams, and Kieran Hayward are also in play. The next month or two should be very interesting for Hawk fans as they wait to see who ultimately joins Charles Brown in the Hawks' 2016 class.
