9/18 Odds and Ends

Over the course of the past week, St. Joe's has seen three primary recruiting targets either select other schools or drop the Hawks from their list. Inside, get the latest on where things currently stand as well as a few notes on upcoming practices and more.

Last Saturday night, 2016 Friends' Central (PA) forward DeAndre Hunter committed to Virginia on his official visit. Wednesday saw Hershey (PA) post Dylan Painter commit to Villanova. Then, just a day later, Worcester Academy (MA) forward Kevin Marfo trimmed his list down to five, and his final cut did not include St. Joe's. To say that this past week wasn't kind to the Hawks would be an understatement.

With Painter, Marfo, and Hunter now out of the picture, St. Joe's has just one offer out to a 2016 big man, and that big man, Brewster Academy (MA) power forward Taurean Thompson, would appear a longshot at best to land on Hawk Hill. Thompson has already taken an official to Xavier, has one planned for Syracuse, and is also strongly considering Temple, Seton Hall, and Rutgers, in addition to the Hawks.

As a result of the thinning of front court prospects, St. Joe's head coach Phil Martelli traveled to Kimball Union Academy (NH) to check in on 6'8 big man Nathan Knight. St. Joe's has yet to offer Knight, and it's unclear if an offer is forthcoming. It's clear that the Hawks will likely need to broaden their scope though if they intend to sign a big man in the class of 2016.

One of St. Joe's top guard targets in the class of 2016, St. Thomas More (CT) combo guard Christian Vital, is on an official visit to UNLV this weekend. He has already visited Dayton officially. St. Joe's got an unofficial from the New York native back in the spring. Vital and St. Joe's commit Charles Brown will form a dynamic backcourt at STM this season. Brown is doing a prep year at St. Thomas More after graduating in the spring from George Washington (PA). He will be a freshman on Hawk Hill in the fall.

The Hawks are still heavily in the mix with 6'3 Garfield Heights (OH) guard Frankie Hughes, who visited SJU officially Labor Day Weekend, and has upcoming visits scheduled to Texas A&M and Minnesota. Australian guard Kiieran Hayward also remains very much in the picture.

St. Joe's is already very active in the class of 2017, especially with bigs. Zach Kent, Ejike Obinna, and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree already hold offers. Maret School (DC) 6'10 post Luke Garza can now be added to that list, after being offered by St. Joe's last weekend. George Washington, Iowa, and De Paul are among the big man's other offers.

Due to changes in NCAA rules, St. Joe's is allowed to squeeze in a handful of full-squad practices before the official start of practice. The first came yesterday. The team will also practice Saturday the 19th from 9 to 10 am, Thursday the 24th from 3:30 to 4:30, and Tuesday the 29th from 3:30 to 4:30. The first official practice of the season will be Saturday October 3rd from 10 am to 1 pm.
