Quick Hits: SLU Downs Xavier On Road 73-68

Saint Louis stopped a 43-game conference winning streak for the Xavier Musketeers at Cintas Center and moved to 16-4 on the season.

Game ball: Brian Conklin. The senior took over the second half, and despite foul trouble, still ended up with 19 points. He also hit some key free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for SLU. The Billikens' offense for a large portion of the second half largely consisted of feeding Conklin the ball and seeing what he could do. A strong honorable mention to Rob Loe, who lit up the first half. Also to Xavier's Mark Lyons, who scored a career-high 27 points and kept the Musketeers in the game.

Key number: 1-3. That was Kenny Frease's field goal makes and attempts. The big man, who figured to be a large part of Xavier's offense against a smaller SLU squad, disappeared for much of the night.

Weix's Take: This wasn't one that SLU circled at the beginning of the year as a "win", but this was a huge win. If one had checked out SLU's potential NCAA Tournament resume coming into tonight, there wouldn't have been much to see. After tonight, however, a big road win will give them a rather hefty boost. After suffering a stretch of poor free-throw performances, the Billikens shot nearly 80 percent and knocked down freebies when they needed to.

Up next: SLU will travel home, be in classes tomorrow, and then fly out to UMass for a tough road game against the Minutemen on Saturday.
