Quick Hits: SLU Rides Ellis To Win at SJU

SLU started off its Philadelphia road trip with a big victory against St. Joseph's thanks to Cody Ellis' three-point marksmanship.

Game ball: Cody Ellis. The Aussie junior went absolutely bananas from deep. He hit five three-pointers in the second half and led the Billikens to a 72-60 victory at Hagan Arena.

Key Number: 5. Ellis canned that many treys in the second half. It was a big-time effort and his season-high in three-pointers. It tied his career-high, when he had six against George Washington in 2010. Ellis dropped 20 points tonight as well, which equaled his career-high.

Weix's Take: Knowing they needed at least a split in this week's games to have a solid chance at a NCAA Tournament bid, the Billikens dominated the Hawks from the get-go. SLU got up 12-0, and although they gave it all back, they trailed for just 25 seconds during the entire game. Every time St. Joe's made a run, it seemed as though the Billikens had an answer of their own. Dwayne Evans, who played limited minutes due to foul trouble, set the tone for SLU in the early going with six rebounds in the first five minutes. The Hawks' big men, C.J. Aiken and Halil Kanacevic were neutralized due to phenomenal ball pressure from the Bills' guards on the perimeter. Widely known as one of the best defensive teams in the country, SLU played executed its man-to-man to near perfection tonight.

Up Next: SLU will stay in Philadelphia for a Saturday showdown with La Salle at Tom Gola Arena. The Explorers lost tonight at Richmond and are now 6-4 in Atlantic 10 play. The Bills are 19-5 on the season and 7-3 in-conference.
