Quick Hits: SLU Falls To Xavier 71-64

SLU couldn't overcome hot shooting from the Xavier Musketeers as they came up short in the A-10 semifinals 71-64.

Game Ball: Tu Holloway. The senior preseason All-American was dynamite after a virtual no-show a couple of weeks ago against SLU at Chaifetz Arena. Holloway could do no wrong as he poured in bucket after bucket. Honorable mention goes to freshman Dez Wells, who used an eight point spurt of his own to thwart away a Billikens comeback.

Key Number: 65%. That's what Xavier shot in the second half. Their 13-for-20 performance from the field held off a spirited run from the second-seeded Billikens. The Muskies seemed to make every play when they needed to, including a huge three-pointer by Mark Lyons with one second left on the shot clock with 1:30 remaining to put XU up five.

Weix's Take: Both teams are locks for the tournament one would think, but Xavier was far more aggressive in this showdown which proved to be the deciding factor.

Brian Conklin and Kwamain Mitchell, SLU's leaders all year long, had games to forget. Mitchell was three-for-14 from the field and although Conklin had 14 points, the forward couldn't manage to corral a rebound. When it mattered most, Kenny Frease was there to grab a board over Conklin with 30 seconds left and the Muskies up three. SLU could never recover from that play.

On the whole, the only real thing this loss might change is a seed or two drop for the Bills and perhaps a location not as close to Saint Louis.

Up Next: Saint Louis now waits to hear their fate tomorrow evening. The Billikens are likely in the 8-11 seed range, which would make for a very difficult potential second round opponent.
