Mercer Breaks Down Game, Recruiting

2014 forward Mack Mercer spoke to from Las Vegas about how his summer went, how recruiting is progressing, and when he hopes to make a decision by.

The AAU career for many teams will come to an end this weekend. One such team was MBA Select and 6-foot-9 forward Mack Mercer.

Playing out in Las Vegas, Mercer's team lost by 1 but he reflected on the experience positively.

"I felt like i played pretty well," he told "I passed it very well, shot it well, rebounded the best I have in a long time.

"It's been a heck of an experience. I loved every moment of it. It's crazy to think it's all done AAU-wise."

Mercer now turns his attention to his high school season and upcoming college decision.

While he might have performed well this July, there are still areas he would like to see get better in advance of stepping on a Division I campus.

"Improving my jumper," he said. "I expanded my game outside the perimeter, but better ball handling ability will make me that much more dangerous of a player."

He is being recruited as a "Stretch 4", and believes that he has a fair amount of assets to bring to a program.

"I have the size to post up but the shooting ability to stretch floor when needed," he said.

The offers that Mercer is seriously considering are Indiana State, Belmont, Boston College, and SLU.

"Those are the schools that have been on me the hardest," he said. "Now I'm going to sit down with my family and talk about taking some visits unofficially in August and then a couple more officially in September."

Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Clemson have recently ramped up their interest, but it is still to be determined if they can crack his top schools.

"The relationship with a staff is one of my biggest things that I care about," he said. "Playing style, high academics are also huge. Basketball is going to end some time and I'm going to have to have a degree."

Mercer believes the Billikens might be a fit for his future.

"They're a solid team," he said. "Fundamental, they share the ball, play great defense. It could be a great opportunity for me [to play there].

"Coach [Jim] Crews has been in a lot more contact this month," he said. "Coach [Jim] Platt started my recruitment with [SLU] and they've been in close contact.
