Indiana native Elliott Welmer came to the SLU Elite Camp last year and showed he was agile and had a solid knack for scoring the basketball.
On Wednesday evening, he decided he wanted to be a Billiken.
"SLU plays my type of game," he said. "Getting out in transition and pick and pops. That's what I do best."
Welmer held offers from Northern Kentucky, Wright State, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, in addition to SLU.
The six-foot-eight forward is a stretch four and hails from Columbus, Ind.
He told BillikenReport.com that there are a number of things he needs to work on before hitting the hardwood in Midtown.
"I need to improve on my strength and my ball handling," he said. "Just playing off the dribble pretty well."
He has some familiarity with one current player.
"I played against Mike Crawford," he said. "I knew him a little bit before my official visit down to SLU."
The connection with the coaching staff paid off for SLU in bringing Welmer in as part of the fold.
"I get along with Coach [Jim] Crews a lot," Welmer said. "I also like Coach [Jim] Platt. The whole staff really spent time getting to know me."
