Only a few short months ago, Matt Neufeld was holding two offers for the 2014 school year, and admittedly wasn’t sure what his future would hold.
“My name wasn’t out there,” he told BillikenReport.com. “In July, I really showed coaches what I was capable of doing. I showed my length, ability in the block, and just overall improvement.”
Having reclassified to 2015 and attending high school at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas, Neufeld hopes to refine his skills before attending college next season.
“I came here because I wanted to improve as much as possible,” he said. “The game is played at a higher level, and I’m excited to see how it goes.”
With his game improving, so too have his college prospects. He’s tripping to St. Mary’s for an official visit this weekend, and then will go to Clemson, Saint Louis, and Colorado on the subsequent weekends thereafter.
“All of the coaches are really good guys,” he said. “It’s about finding where I will fit in the best and what the community is like around me.”
Neufeld jumped on SLU’s radar after assistant coach Jim Platt saw him numerous times this summer.
“He came out to see me a couple times and was really positive about me,” he said. “They really want me. I’m looking forward to visiting so I can see how I would fit in. I would fit in as a ‘5’, but would have some ability to pick-and-pop.”
Neufeld said he was looking to sign in November and early playing time is also quite a large factor in his decision.
