Holmes Visits Saint Louis

Olathe (Ks.) South standout Denver Holmes admitted he was a little intimidated when he first starting talking to Saint Louis University coach Rick Majerus, but the shooting guard was also impressed by the new coach and likes what he has heard about the Billikens.

Holmes made his unofficial visit to Saint Louis early last week and spent approximately five hours on campus. He toured the campus, got a look at the Chaifetz Arena construction process, met with academic advisors and the strength coach and talked a lot of basketball.

"It was really good," Holmes said. "I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the campus and everything they had to say down there."

The 6-foot-4, 175-pound Holmes does not have a scholarship offer from the Billikens, but that could be coming — especially after Washington (Ill.) Community shooting guard Matt Roth has crossed SLU of his list in favor of Bradley and Indiana.

The Kansas shooting guard was shown around campus by SLU assistant coach Angres Thorpe. Majerus, who has talked to Holmes by phone a couple times, was not on campus. Neither were members of the team, who were taking some time off before the start of the next semester.

But Holmes has liked what he's heard from Thorpe and Majerus.

"They said they were looking at a couple guards and I was one of them," Holmes said. "They were talking about how they would be losing a lot of players after this year. We also talked about coming up here for a home visit."

Holmes has an in-home visit with Evansville scheduled for Sept. 9 and is trying to set up in-home visits with SLU, Santa Clara and Florida Atlantic.

The 6-4 shooting guard said he has narrowed his list of schools to those four, though he does not have a scholarship offer from SLU or Santa Clara.

During his junior season, Holmes was Olathe South's leading scorer and was recognized as a Kansas Basketball Coaches Association 6A all-state honorable mention selection, a Kansas-Sports.com's 6A third-team pick and an all-Sunflower League second-team selection.
