Cotto Makes The Call

Alton (Ill.) High School senior guard Ruben Cotto likes Saint Louis University coach Rick Majerus and believes in him. Cotto believes Majerus can help him get to the next level and believes Majerus will get the Billikens into the NCAA tournament soon.

On Saturday, Cotto called Majerus and committed to play at Saint Louis next season.

"I always wanted to go here, but I wasn't ready to commit because I didn't have my grades," Cotto said. "Now that I got caught up with all my work and have my grades I feel more comfortable to commit."

A high-scoring 6-foot senior from Puerto Rico who can play either point guard or shooting guard, becomes the Billikens' seventh commitment for the 2008-09 season after Pinckneyville (Ill.) guard Kyle Cassity committed on Thursday night.

"I like Majerus and his staff," Cotto said. "The (assistants) have been head coaches at other colleges. They all have experience."

But it was Majerus, the former Utah coach, who left a big impression on him.

"Coach Majerus makes everybody the best they can be," Cotto said.

Cotto averaged 22.3 points, 5 rebounds, 4.1 steals and 3.2 assists per game and made 72 of 199 3-point attempts (36.2 percent). Alton, which graduated all five starters from last year's 27-win team, went 24-7.

Cotto transferred to Alton from LaSalle High School in Miami. There, Cotto averaged 19.6 points, 8.1 assists and 3.9 steals per game as a junior.

Cotto joins an impressive recruiting class — center Brett Thompson, power forward Willie Reed, forward Brian Conklin, shooting guard Femi John and point guard Kwamain Mitchell signed in November and Cassity, a 6-5 guard committed this week — that figures to be the foundation for Majerus at Saint Louis.

Cotto and Cassity can officially sign with SLU next month.
