Australian Forward Makes Commitment

Saint Louis University basketball coach Rick Majerus made a recruiting trip to Australia a few months ago that has turned out to be a successful one. The Billikens will have a pair of Aussies on the roster next season.

Cody Ellis, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound power forward at the Australian Institute of Sport, committed to Saint Louis University this weekend.

"It feels good to have finally committed," Ellis said in an e-mail. "It was a tough decision but I know I made the right one in SLU."

Ellis picked the Billikens over Wake Forest and Colorado.

He visited the United States in December with his family and made official visits to his three finalists. After making the trip to St. Louis, he returned home and took a few weeks to figure out where he wanted to go to school next year.

"Well I just really liked the way the team was coached," Ellis said in an e-mail. "I felt really comfortable around the guys. And liked the fact I could be part of something special over the next couple years with the group."

Ellis becomes the fifth commitment for the Billikens for next season.

Forwards Jonathan Smith and Cory Remekun and guards Christian Salecich and Jeff Reid all signed in November.

Salecich and Ellis are teammates at the Australian Institute of Sport.

The 19-year-old Ellis is described as a power forward who can also play small forward because of his ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter and extend opposing defenses.

Cody's father, Mike Ellis, was a shooting guard in Australia's National Basketball League. He helped the Perth Wildcats win championships in 1990 and 1991 and later served as head coach and general manager of the club after retiring as a player.
