SLU Women Fall In A-10 Tournament

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – No. 10 seed Saint Louis climbed out of an early hole and eventually took a second-half lead, but a late run by No. 7 St. Bonaventure lifted the Bonnies to a 71-59 victory over the Billikens Friday in an Atlantic 10 Championship first-round game.

Lauren Woods led all scorers with 19 points, while Amanda Kemezys scored 17 and Katie Paganelli added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. The Billikens (11-19) shot 50 percent (11-of-22) in the second half as they overcame a 32-24 halftime deficit. But St. Bonaventure (22-8) outscored SLU 22-7 over the final 9:19 to earn a berth in Saturday's quarterfinals against No. 2 Dayton.

Seniors Kemezys and Paganelli concluded their careers tied for 10th on SLU's career scoring list with 1,244 points apiece.

"Obviously this isn't the ending we wanted," head coach Shimmy Gray-Miller said. "We caught a hot, well-coached St. Bonaventure team at the wrong time.

"I feel we got better as a team as the year went on," Gray-Miller said. "There was a point in the season when our players had every reason to give up. But I credit the leadership and toughness of our two seniors, Amanda Kemezys and Katie Paganelli, with keeping things together. They truly left a legacy.

"Amanda and Katie came in as freshmen with a goal of creating an identity for Billiken basketball, and I can say with complete confidence that they have done that. Any future success our program has is due in large part to the foundation they established."
