The energy level was sky high while the sunset was hitting the horizon at the beginning of the first San Diego State fall football practice.
"It's just like every practice," Coach Long said. "They are excited to be out here when they first start and ill comeback three or four days from now and they'll be sore and tired. Won't be quite as excited but always excited the first day."
"That's the way camp is. They get sore, they get tired and about a week before the first game they get excited again. This is about work and getting better every day."
This year the coaching staff restructured practice a little bit.
"We are doing a lot of special teams then going to our main part of practice, doing fundamentals and competing against each other, offensive, defense and at the end we are doing scout teamwork," Coach Long said. "Which we haven't done in the past this early in the season, we think it's right because we are a pretty veteran team."
The competition between Ryan Katz and Adam Dingwell was nearly even in terms of snaps with the first team.
"I think if you would have counted reps it's about five reps of each other for the first team," Coach Long said. "There will be a decision towards the end of this week. I mean we got to get at least one day or two days of full pads in, when people are actually running into each other with the live action around the quarterback before you really get a good for it. We'll make a decision early."
"All you can look for now is them calling the right play, making the right check when they see things in the defense and you can check their accuracy on how well they throw the ball. I mean there are still bodies around but they know they are not going to get bumped into makes it a lot easier."
Expect Eric Pinkins and Gabe Lemon along with the other Warrior spot to receive an equal amount of playing time, as each player will probably rotate between the first and second team.
"I did see Pinkins a little with the first team," Coach Long said. "I expect both of them [Pinkins and Lemon] to play about the same number of snaps probably like Marcus Andrews and Rene Siluano on the other side. That's the kind of the way we do it on defense but I wouldn't be shocked if Pinkins was out there with the first team."
Coach Long clearly likes the flow of spring practice more than fall due to spring practice the team goes from one drill to the next and always compete offense versus defense. It's much more football orientated.
"Here we are trying to prepare for special teams, trying to prepare for Washington so the only part I really liked was the middle part when we were going offense versus defense but you can't spend your whole time in the fall going offense versus defense like you can in the spring," Coach Long said. "So the fall practice between special teams and scout work, I really like that. It was pretty good we were moving around good, getting after each other, it was kind of good. Then it was sort of slow at the beginning and slow at the end but that's when you do special teams and scout work, that's the way it is."
-Defensive back J.J. Whittaker was able to hit the practice field and had an interception in his return. Coach Long saw the INT and said of the sophomore, "Well this is the first time he's actually been with us. First practice he made it all the way through so that's good to see. I'm sure he's a little rusty but he should get better as we go."
- SDSU currently has 105 at camp with 85 on scholarship so that means there are 20 walk-ons. Of the 20, some have been here while others are new but Coach Long thinks they could bring on more walk-ons once school starts.
-Scout work will be at every practice. Coach Long said, "it's something different than we did last year."
- Former Aztec Larry Gibbs was in attendance for practice as he volunteered during the summer with the football team in the weight room.
