Donnel Pumphrey made the decision to commit to San Diego State today, and he gives the Aztecs their sixth commitment in the past four days.
Pumphrey's commitment comes on the heels of commitments from Mira Mesa HS players Trey Lomax and Addison Morrow.
When asked if the decisions of Lomax and Morrow had any impact on his commitment, Pumphrey didn't hold back.
"Honestly yes [their commitment had an impact], because I grew up with them and us three went to the Under Armour All Star game our eighth grade year," stated Pumphrey. "I'm just glad I can play ball with friends."
Pumphrey went on to describe his relationship with Lomax and Morrow.
"I'm super excited because we haven't played on the same field in a while," said Pumphrey. "When we were all on the same field, no one could beat us."
In fact, Pumphrey's decision to commit today can be directly attributed to Lomax's commitment.
"I just woke up reading a post on Facebook from Trey's dad," said Pumphrey. "I was going to commit soon, but why wait? That's where I want to play ball at."
Pumphrey sees himself as being a perfect fit for the SDSU offense.
"I see myself being a playmaker," said Pumphrey. "I think the pro-style offense fits me really well."
When asked if the success of Ronnie Hillman had any effect on his interest in SDSU, Pumphrey revealed that it did.
"Yes [Hillman's success had something to do with my interest], because coming out of HS, he was my size and the SDSU coaching staff got him right for the NFL," said Pumphrey. "I think that I'm similar to Ronnie Hillman in some ways. I think they can do what they did for him for me also."
SDSU stood out to Pumphrey for a few reasons.
"The thing that stands out about SDSU to me is their fans and the support of everyone around them," said Pumphrey. "SDSU is on the rise. I also feel that SDSU produces great running backs, such as Marshall Faulk and Ronnie Hillman."
As a former San Diego resident, Pumphrey cannot wait to move back to the area.
"I'm looking forward to the weather," said Pumphrey. "Nothing beats the California weather."
Pumphrey describes his commitment to SDSU as being "very, very strong."
"My goals this season are to just ball out, lead my team to a state title win and finish the season leading the state in rushing yards and touchdowns with 2,000+ yards and 30+ touchdowns," asserted Pumphrey.
Pumphrey can't wait to be an Aztec, and he wants SDSU fans to know one thing.
"I just want to tell SDSU fans to be ready to watch the Aztecs put on a show!"
Pumphrey is an Aztec!
