It's Too Early
It's was Day 3 of fall camp and San Diego State head coach Rocky Long had a simple answer of what the Aztecs are working on.
"We are trying to get better," Long said.
A member of the media then asked if Long was happy with the first three days of practice.
"It's way too early," Long said.
He then reiterated moments later, "It's too early to evaluate."
We'll know a lot more Friday when they go full pads.
Offense Coming Along
The Aztecs offense has a lot to replace with both Ryan Lindley and Ronnie Hillman now in the NFL. They have two PAC-12 transfers in quarterback Ryan Katz and wide receiver Brice Butler stepping into starting roles, three new offensive lineman, a crowded backfield and a developing wide receiver core.
Don't tell them that. The offense feels things are really coming along.
"I think we are doing good," Brice Butler said. "The run game, we got some great running backs back there toting the rock. We got some great offensive lineman. We got Nik Embernate and Alec Johnson back. We are looking pretty full at the offensive line. We are hitting at all cylinders right now."
"We are just trying to get the chemistry down during the summer," Ryan Katz said. "We are using fall camp to do the same. We are just out here in helmets right now and not really hitting but once we start doing that getting everything down, the timing down, get the flow of the offense going."
"I think we worked with them all this summer," Katz said. "I feel good with Brice, Gavin, Dylan Denzo, Lockett, all those guys. We put in hours over the summer so I feel good with all those guys."
The extra hours in the offseason seem to be paying dividends.
The importance of the scout team is being stressed during fall camp after last seasons suspect year.
"Better your scout team is the better off you are but all scout teams are tough to get to do what you want them to do," Long said. "They are all the younger players that don't really know the tempo, the speed that it's supposed to be done at, running plays that they don't know even know, trying to run it off a card. It's difficult for those guys."
-NFL scouts from the Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers attended practice yesterday.
-J.J. Whittaker was back practicing at full strength on Wednesday.
-Players are expected to scrimmage tomorrow with full pads.
-SDSU Fan Fest is set for Saturday August 18th at Cathedral Catholic High School. Gates open at 11 a.m. and the inter-squad scrimmage begins at 12 p.m. The event is free to the general public.
