It was after Monday mornings practice that San Diego State head coach Rocky Long named Ryan Katz their starting quarterback.
"First of all it was a great competition," San Diego State offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig said. "We have two very capable quarterbacks but at this time we felt Ryan [Katz] had more productivity in camp and wanted to get that position solidified. Looking forward to moving on with it."
What were the major differences between Katz and second-string quarterback Adam Dingwell?
"Repetitive accuracy was the biggest thing," Ludwig said. "Ryan [Katz] was completing more passes at the time we made the decision and that was the driving factor. Both of those players are very athletic and make plays on the run but we felt with Ryan in terms of the drop back passing game had a slight edge over Adam [Dingwell]."
"The experience factor always kicks in," San Diego State head coach Rocky Long explained. "He's [Katz] been there before, been in those stadiums before. He's actually played at this level while Adam [Dingwell] hasn't yet."
"Experience tells you he [Katz] should be able to handle it a little bit better than Adam [Dingwell] because he's been there several times before. That's an educated guess. That's normally how it works."
Offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig broke the news to quarterback Ryan Katz on Sunday as he feels that Katz has shown enough to name him the starter.
"I don't think it's a clear cut decision," Long said.
While it may not be a "clear cut decision," the hugest advantage of naming a starter is now Katz will be able to receive a majority of the snaps for the next two weeks of practice.
"He [Katz} can get in a groove with his teammates, offensive line, get used to the rhythm in his cadence, chemistry with the wide receivers," Ludwig said.
The 6-foot-1 and 210 pound Oregon State transfer has the Aztecs coaching staff expecting an offense with a lot of firepower.
"He [Katz] is a dynamic athlete," Ludwig said. "We got to work on a lot of things offensively with fitting him into our system. He is a very good athlete. He makes plays on the run. He's just got to completely immerse himself into this offense system and I look for big production from him."
Injury To The Offensive Line
Redshirt sophomore Garrett Corbett sustained an ankle injury on Saturday and was seen with a walking boot on Monday.
"They are estimating three or four days," Long said. "I'm not a doctor, I'm not a trainer but I think the worst thing to do is put a guy in a boot but I'm not a expert so I don't do it. All that does is prevent them from getting back sooner. That's not a medical opinion but a personal opinion."
"He's got a ankle sprain and I guess it swelled up pretty good last night."
Right Tackle Competition
True freshman Nico Siragusa was working with the second team at the right tackle spot as he was filling in for Terry Poole who was still in summer school.
"We are having competition at right tackle," Long said. "There are a lot of guys going to be tried at right tackle."
-NFL scouts from the Eagles, Falcons, Bills and 49ers were in attendance Monday.
-The Aztecs had around 30 players at summer school with about two-thirds of them got done this past Friday while 13 of them are still in summer school until Wednesday.
-Jamaal Franklin dropped by again to watch practice.
